Both Keith and Allura remain at Shiro's side, and through flashbacks we learn how Shiro came to mentor Keith, that Shiro suffers from a serious though undisclosed illness, and are introduced to Shiro's partner, Adam.
While at San Deigo Comic-Con, Screen Rant had to opportunity to discuss the news of Shiro being a gay character with Voltron: Legendary Defender's executive producers, Joaquim Dos Santos and Lauren Montgomery.
The actor, who plays Shiro, sent a big thank you to everyone supporting the Black Paladin as this new piece of his backstory comes to light.
“I wanted to hang back this morning and let Shiro’s moment be its own,” Keaton wrote.
It was great,” the actress said.

Sadly, Josh Keaton couldn’t attend the big convention, but he took to Twitter afterwards to address the revelation. The same can now be said of Shiro, and in revealing him as gay, Voltron: Legendary Defender has broadened the scope of who a brave leader and Paladin of Voltron can be.

The news that Shiro is gay and was previously in a relationship with a man is already being responded to by the Voltronfandom at large, with an overwhelming number of fans reacting positively. Maybe we’ll find it somewhere else.’ But then we found out pretty soon after that, Shiro wasn’t allowed to die.
I think that’s the most important thing to take away from it.
LM: It’s a very normal part of his life and it’s just a very normal part of our story. Netflix stunned fans of the Voltron cartoon at San Diego Comic-Con by revealing that one of the lead characters in the hit animated series is an out man.
At the Voltron Legendary Defender panel yesterday, cast members and showrunner Lauren Montgomery previewed a clip from “A Little Adventure,” the first episode of the show’s upcoming seventh season.
And I think we kind of try to envision a world where all of those things are just normal and accepted and people don’t freak out about them.
JDS: We’re happy that it resonates and lands and is important for animation that plays to such a wide audience. It was definitely something, that beautiful relationship that had developed over years.”

It was the same when it was revealed that Pidge was actually a girl - nothing about her character changed, but in being a girl who acted and dressed in ways that weren't strictly feminine, she broadened the show's scope of what a girl could be. The first episode of the show's seventh season screened during its panel at San Diego Comic-Con, and in it, fans learn that prior to leaving for the mission that kicks off the series, Shiro was in a romantic relationship with a man.

Netflix's Voltron: Legendary Defender confirms lead character is gay
Fans of popular Netflix animated series Voltron: Legendary Defender are celebrating the news that one of the show's main characters is gay.
The announcement was made during a panel discussion at San Diego Comic-Con, with showrunner Lauren Montgomery revealing that character Takashi ‘Shiro’ Shirogane is gay, according to reports from comicbook.com.
She also hinted that fans of the show will soon meet a new character, Adam, who Shiro was once ready to marry before breaking it off.
“He’s not married yet,” Montgomery said.
“But that was the road they were going down until Shiro made the unfortunate decision [to leave], and they drifted apart and that was the end… for their relationship.
"It was definitely something, that beautiful relationship that had developed over years.
“You’ll see in that little case with the trophies is a picture of Shiro and Adam,” she added.
“They had been flight partners.”
Originally airing in 1986, the series was rebooted by Netflix in 2016 and is about to release its seventh and penultimate season.
