The cynical among you who don’t succumb to the mystery of the temple may instead opt to visit the Royal Botanical Garden or Pinnewala Elephant Orphanage which lie slightly further afield by car. Other places to check out include the upmarket jazz clubs, rooftop bars and world-class restaurants studding the skyline.

Promising all of the allure of South Asia, with less chaos and fewer crowds than India, Sri Lanka is a dream destination for anyone searching for something different. Udawalawe is also the best place in the country to spot wild Asian elephants, with year-round opportunities to catch sight of leopard, buffalo, crocodile, boar and beyond.

Udawalawe National Park

The second of our favourite Sri Lanka national parks is Udawalawe, a rather less crowded alternative to Yala. Every corner is rich in history and culture. It might remind you of a warehouse club in Berlin, but you're actually in Colombo! The cozy thatched roofs enhance the atmosphere, and the relaxing music ties everything together for a great chill vibe.

Shisha is really popular in Colombo!

Follow up your day of marine adventure with delectable seafood treats in candlelight along the beachfront.

4. Mirissa

A one-hour drive from Galle along the gorgeous coastline lies the romantic beach town of Mirissa Sri Lanka, which any tuk-tuk or taxi driver will oblige to take you.

The location is excellent for sightseeing, very central and near public transportation for exploring the city.

The Juliana Hotel also has a great restaurant. Walking around the streets felt like a spiritual cleanse!

Colombo is full of Buddhist temples, markets, and friendly faces from Sri Lanka. In September and October however, the park is closed for maintenance.

It has colorful quirks similar to India but with a more relaxing atmosphere. It was a blast!

#5. Hilton Colombo

Hilton hotels worldwide are always welcoming to LGBTQ guests. Find ticket vendors along the edge of the beaches or book with ease through your hotel. Those looking for a quiet rendezvous should consider the bars and restaurants owned by large chain hotels, as these are places generally more comfortable with same-sex flirtations.

Kandy

The train ride to Kandy from Ella (or vice-versa) is said to be one of the most beautiful journeys to undertake in Sri Lanka, so it would be mad not to mention both towns. Here is a list of the straight venues that are known to be gay friendly and where we were comfortable with PDAs:

So, here are some of the best gay clubs and bars in Colombo -

Remember, being gay in Sri Lanka is still considered a crime. Rural in the best sense of the word, Ella retains its charming small-town feel while also providing a convenient base for further ventures into the mountainous countryside.
