Bacon was a self-educated thinker as well as a self-taught artist, who had several copies of Nietzsche’s work on his night table. One was Yvonne Bocquentin, a sophisticated connoisseur whom he met at an exhibition opening, a hint that he was already taking an interest in the visual arts. At one point he traveled to Berlin with a sexually adventurous family friend; Bacon would later claim his father “sold” him to this friend.

Escaping as a young man to London and Paris, Bacon began a brief career as a designer.

Bacon’s father made one final attempt to influence his son’s life and it was exceedingly inept. At least two beat him frequently, which Bacon seems to have relished.

He was also one of the first people to theorize the movement of continents, the way air and water move across global routes, and plate tectonics.

Van Homboldt died in 1859 and posthumously, his peers recognized that he was part of the LGBTQ+ community because of relationships with army officer Reinhard von Haeften and Wilhelm Gabriel Wegener. As a natural researcher, he used the modern scientific method to question the world around him and better understand the landscape. Francis Bacon, knighted in 1613, both discovered and popularized the use of the scientific method we rely on today.
