The relationships between pups and their handlers/alphas can develop into a form of mentoring even outside the world of role play, and packs can offer a source of mutual support and genuine community.
How does puppy play work?
Puppy play culture is based around dom/sub (dominance and submission) relationships with agreed rules, much like the Protocols of the Old Guard in the leather community.
Pups will often get together in ‘packs’, the most famous of which is the Fog City Pack in San Francisco.
Talk to your partners about your HIV protection strategies, whether that’s condoms, PrEP or maintaining an undetectable viral load. Packs form a familial bond and a power hierarchy modelled off a dog pack.
Lots of venues (particularly leather and fetish bars) host pup-themed events, but packs will also run private events – even just chilling and watching a movie as pups – and provide spaces for members to play.
While every pack is different, there’s a generally accepted hierarchy in the pup community:
- Handlers – Doms with one or more pups under their care.
The pup community is very welcoming (though different packs will have their own rules about membership) and there are pup-friendly spaces for people of all genders, sexualities and walks of life.
If you’re interested in puppy play in your area, there are plenty of groups for connecting online. In 2022, the meme inspired photoshops of additional Whitney Chewston photos adding similarly ironic homophobic captions, as well as captions suggesting the dog learned from its homophobic ways and is now tolerant of the LGBTQ+ community.
Origin

I highly recommend playing with the Pod Butt Plug, heaps of fun and a great stretching tool.
Over time I will be adding some more fun items that I enjoy, like this awesome Puppy Wrist Band. Twitter user @borowiczko posted a response to the comment with an image macro captioned, "just kidding not too fond of gay people," gaining around 17 likes in the same span of time (shown below, right).
On September 5th, Twitter user @Chad01412488 posted a version of the meme captioned, "not too fond of industrial society," a reference to Industrial Society And Its Future, gaining over 1,000 likes in six months (shown below).
Additional images of Whitney Chewston also became the subject of ironic homophobic memes in 2022, as well as memes suggesting the dog learned from its homophobic ways or came out as gay itself.
Make sure you also discuss how you’re planning to manage other STIs such as syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia.
Who does puppy play?
Anyone can be a pup! It’s important to communicate your boundaries to everyone involved and make sure you respect theirs.
To help with physical safety and comfort when on all fours, Pup Jaxx suggests:
“While there’s no gear necessary to participate in pup play, if you are a pup…getting good quality mitts/pads will make sure you’re protecting your joints and preventing cuts and abrasions.”
Safety as a pup also includes taking charge of your sexual health.
The trend was started by Twitter user @yolanda_parody. Every pup needs a tail, a collar and a mask. This little fella will have a great time at your restaurant!" referencing the Chick-Fil-A Gay Marriage Controversy and the restaurant regularly being accused of supporting anti-LGBTQ+ causes, gaining over 18,000 likes and 1,200 retweets in two days (shown below).
I’m Gpup and I’m a human pup currently living in Melbourne Australia.
I’ve been into pup play for a while with my journey having just started recently . Apparently, the user, a member of the LGBTQ+ community, made the meme to use amongst friends as an inside joke. It’s sure to fill even the greediest pup ass making him howl and growl!
Still training your ass to accept your pup tail?
On March 24th, iFunny user themilkman48 posted a better quality version of the meme with a wider crop, gaining over 40 smiles in a year (shown below, right).
Spread
The meme gained viral spread through reposts.
On June 2nd, Justin Whang and Taylor Lorenz posted it to their Instagram pages, gaining over 11,000 likes in a day. Each pack has at least one alpha pup. It’s grown from a niche kink group to a thriving community with representation at some the world’s biggest leather and fetish festivals, including the Folsom Street Fair, Folsom Europe, CLAW and Easter in Berlin.
