“You do know two boys can like-like each other, right? But now that he’s realizing those feelings aren’t going anywhere, it’s hard to hold them back. Unlike his on-screen persona, who navigates deep, platonic bonds amid the supernatural sleuthing, the real-life Revri seems to embrace a more spirited and engaging interaction with those around him.
It was Rexstrew’s pitch to have Edwin wear something different for that episode.
When filming came around, Revri was blown away by Rexstrew’s ability to bring out so much emotion after seemingly holding back in rehearsals.
“To change Edwin is a big deal because Edwin doesn’t like change,” costume designer Kelli Dunsmore tells Tudum. He’s Edwin’s first true love, and he doesn’t push it away. Fans and viewers are left to speculate and dream about the possibilities of his heart’s status. This light-hearted revelation from his peers piques interest, especially considering Revri’s role involves a complex, non-romantic chemistry with his fellow ghostly detective, Edwin Paine, portrayed as gay in the series.
Revri, with his striking looks and charming demeanor, certainly fits the bill of a flirtatious personality, leading many to wonder about his relationship status.
I have a lot of manga about it,” she quips. Specifically in Episode 6, “The Case of the Creeping Forest,” when Edwin changes his outfit for the first time — ghosts don’t really take the time to switch up their wardrobes in Dead Boy Detectives. “I just thought it could be an interesting way to get Charles’ attention,” says Rexstrew. “He starts to crave it,” says Rexstrew.
Since 2016, he’s been crafting entertainment pieces that dive deep into what’s trending in movies, TV, and the celebrity world. “It’s like this really innocent and desperate little attempt.” In the scene, Revri chose to add in a line acknowledging the fashion statement. They spoke a lot about levels, as Charles is physically higher up on the stairs and Edwin is below, which adds to the vulnerable nature of the scene.
“We always felt that Edwin died before he understood that he could be with a man,” Yockey told HuffPost. Yet, despite the intrigue and the obvious questions that arise from his flirtatious nature, he has kept his personal life particularly low-key. “As a ghost, he’s spent all of his time with best friend Charles, and that was good enough for him. But it’s all leading up to this.”
While Charles can’t fully reciprocate Edwin’s feelings now, he completely embraces and accepts him.
Their professional interactions underscore a strong rapport, centered on their commitment to authentically portraying their characters and fostering inclusivity in storytelling.
Thus, while their onscreen chemistry is compelling, it remains a reflection of their acting prowess and dedication to their roles, rather than a mirror of their personal lives.
Despite Edwin’s disclosure, the sentiment is not reciprocated in a romantic sense by Charles & their relationship remains platonic.
Offscreen, both actors maintain privacy regarding their personal lives and have not publicly discussed their sexual orientations. Together, they rehearsed over and over again in Rexstrew’s room before filming. He comes out of the closet when he tells his best friend that he has feelings for him.
“Hiding everything,” says Dunsmore.

But in Episode 7, Edwin specifically confesses his feelings for Charles, after his best mate descends to the depths of hell to save him.
